Overview

Chitwan National Park (932 km²) is a subtropical jungle spreading across the Terai lowlands of southern Nepal, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Famous as a sanctuary for the greater one-horned rhino, it holds Nepal's largest rhino population, and is one of Asia's foremost reserves — home to Bengal tiger, leopard, gaur (Indian bison), sloth bear, sambar, and gharial crocodile.

This two-night jungle-lodge plan packs in the best of Chitwan: morning and evening jeep safaris, a canoe ride downriver to watch for crocodiles, a visit to a local Tharu village, and a guided jungle walk. Chitwan is about 5–6 hours by road from Kathmandu, or roughly 30 minutes by domestic flight to Bharatpur.

Highlights

  • Close encounters with the greater one-horned rhino
  • Early-morning jeep safari — into the jungle for Bengal tiger, leopard, and gaur
  • Canoe ride downriver, watching for gharial crocodile and hippo
  • Visit to a village of the indigenous Tharu people, with a folk-dance show
  • Guided jungle walk — reading the signs of wildlife in tracks and plants
  • Birdwatching in a UNESCO-listed ecosystem (500+ species)

Itinerary

Day 1

Kathmandu → Chitwan (~5–6 hrs by road)

Depart in the morning and head southwest on the Prithvi Highway. After checking in to the jungle lodge, enjoy an evening Tharu folk-dance show. Dinner at the lodge (all meals included).

Day 2

Full Day of Safari

Early morning: jeep safari (rhino, deer, peacock, and — with luck — tiger). Morning: canoe ride downriver, watching for gharial and hippo. Afternoon: Tharu village visit and a guided jungle walk. Evening: dinner at the lodge.

Day 3

Morning Safari → Chitwan → Kathmandu

After a short early-morning birdwatching walk and breakfast, check out and drive back to Kathmandu by private vehicle (~5–6 hrs), arriving in the evening.

  • · The jeep safari can be swapped for, or combined with, an elephant safari where available — please ask.
  • · Besides a private vehicle, tourist bus and flight options are available; a Kathmandu → Chitwan → Pokhara routing (or the reverse) is also possible — please ask.
  • · 2-day/1-night, 4-day/3-night, or longer tours can also be arranged — please ask.
